Prevention Specialist

Hazel Pittman Center is seeking a motivated and community-oriented Prevention Specialist to support substance use prevention efforts across Chester County. This position plays a key role in reducing risk factors for substance misuse and strengthening protective factors for youth, adults, families, and communities.

The Prevention Specialist works under the supervision of the Prevention Director and collaborates with schools, law enforcement, community coalitions, businesses, and other partners to deliver evidence-based prevention strategies that promote healthier outcomes.

What You’ll Do

As a Prevention Specialist, you’ll engage directly with the community to educate, empower, and support prevention initiatives using public health and evidence-based approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention programming to middle- and high-school youth using evidence-based curricula
  • Apply prevention and public health theories to programming tailored to target populations
  • Develop and implement environmental prevention strategies, including compliance checks, safety checkpoints, party dispersals, and environmental scans, in collaboration with law enforcement and community partners
  • Provide education and training to alcohol and tobacco retailers and servers
  • Develop and support youth advisory groups and train youth as peer leaders and health educators
  • Build and maintain partnerships with schools, community organizations, government agencies, and stakeholders
  • Coordinate and support community coalitions focused on substance use prevention and community ownership of prevention efforts
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain accurate reports and documentation required by the agency and funders
  • Evaluate prevention programs to assess effectiveness and make data-informed improvements
  • Execute grant deliverables and contract requirements as assigned
  • Utilize social media and other communication tools to disseminate prevention messages and information
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development activities related to prevention and ATOD issues
  • Uphold all state and federal confidentiality and privacy requirements

What We’re Looking For

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social or behavioral sciences, public health, or a related field
  • At least one (1) year of experience in prevention or related work, preferably including public speaking or community education
  • Experience working with youth, schools, or community-based organizations preferred

Skills & Attributes

  • Knowledge of prevention theory, substance use disorders, and public health principles
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills, particularly with youth and community groups
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure
  • Professional discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality

Additional Requirements

  • Valid state driver’s license or ability to obtain one
  • Must obtain Prevention Specialist credential within three (3) years of employment and maintain certification thereafter
  • Willingness to complete First Aid/CPR training and follow all safety and emergency policies
